When it comes to renewable ventures, our mission is to create value for our clients by bringing our industry subject-matter-experts (SMEs), our hands-on commitment, and robust engineering principles to power their green initiatives.
Our Renewables Expertise
Our Biogas Services
Biogas is a renewable source of methane gas, created when organic matter breaks down in an oxygen-free environment. Biogas can be used to produce renewable heat, electricity, pipeline quality gas or transport fuel, and offers a closed-loop opportunity for multiple businesses, extracting energy while recycling valuable nutrients.
Members of the Obsidian Engineering Renewables Team have experience in the following Biogas processes and applications:
Feedstock Receiving & Handling
Feedstock Pre-Treatment
Anaerobic Digestion
Biogas Production & Conditioning
Digestate Nutrient Recovery, Management & Storage
Digestate Supernatent Treatment & Recycling
Our Biofuel Services
Biofuel is any fuel that can be derived from animal waste and/ or biomass that includes organic, resource-desired waste. Since feedstock material is replenished readily, biofuel can be considered a renewable energy resource and there is a growing demand for biomass processing.
Members of the Obsidian Engineering Renewables Team have experience in the following Biofuel processes and applications:
CO₂ system expansion study inclusive of 20 km pipeline, metering, and compositional analyzers.
Biomass to Renewable Fuels
Seed Oil to RB or RBD
Catalytic Depolymerization
Waste Water Treatment Packages
CFIA Food Grade Design
Our Recent Renewables Projects
At Obsidian, we recognize that much of the renewable space is innovative, feasible, and viable but often left unpursued. Our skilled and focussed team is well-positioned to support our clients in their renewable ventures, from initial concepts to full project realization, offering cost-effective and practical solutions to complex engineering problems.
ALBERTA RENEWABLE NATURAL GAS (RNG) & FERTILIZER FACILITY
Engineering and site integration for a waste management facility designed to utilize over 130,000 t/y of manure, animal tissue waste, and organic resource feedstock to produce 1000 Nm³/h of renewable natural gas and 20,000 t/y of liquid organic fertilizer.
The process utilizes thermal hydrolysis for animal materials, anaerobic digestion, fertilizer preparation, biogas upgrading, and grid injection.
ALBERTA RENEWABLE NATURAL GAS (RNG) FACILITY
Owner’s engineer and site integration for an agricultural renewable energy development utilizing 140,000 t/y of manure and organic feedstock to produce 3,000 Nm³/h of renewable natural gas.
We included processes such as feedstock receiving and pre-treatment, anaerobic digestion, biogas upgrading, RNG pipeline injection, Combined Heat & Power (CHP), digestate management and nutrient separation/ management.
